“Whalez” issued by newly launched Diatom raise more than $7 million for plastic cleanup in less than two weeks
December 12, 2021—The world’s first NFT collection to fund ocean plastic removal—“Whalez”—went on sale at the beginning of December. The collection of 50 total NFTs debuted at Diatom.fund and was launched by Diatom, a new blockchain collective focused on ocean protection.
Sales of Whalez NFTs raised more than $7 million (in current ETH prices) for ocean plastic cleanup projects with only half of the NFT collection released by Dec 10. The series ramps up and will end on Dec 14.
Funds raised so far are estimated to be able to cover the cost of removing more than 4.5 million kilograms of plastic from the environment, a record achievement for any NFT collection and proof that NFTs can contribute toward making the world’s oceans cleaner and healthier.

Diatom’s growth has been explosive. In less than 4 weeks its Discord community server has grown from 0 to over 30,000 followers from around the world. The community raised more than $6M in the first 5 days of the Whalez NFT collection release.
Proceeds from the NFT sales will help fund plastic removal projects around the world. The sales will be Diatom’s first step in creating the world’s first Plastic Removal Credits (PRCs), the first ever tokenization of plastic removal. Diatom’s first plastic removal partner is Cleanhub, whose app-based “track and trace” technology generates a live stream of data that follows plastic waste from collection to processing.
Diatom is demonstrating how the world of cryptocurrency can go beyond code and connect with the physical world to make a real impact and improve conditions for all inhabitants of Earth.
