After a close brush with death due to Covid, Burns fought his way back to health and has emerged with a whole new determination to do what he is passionate about – sharing his business expertise, training, and coaching to help others become successful entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurs are motivated by all kinds of desires. Some have dreams of success, wealth, fame, and innovative problem-solving, while others are driven by a passion for helping and serving others. One entrepreneur admits money is important and necessary, but more than anything else, he is simply doing what he was born to do, sharing his business expertise,
training, and coaching to help others become successful entrepreneurs. Joshua Burns, CEO of Coast 2 Coast Entrepreneurship Consulting, is a successful entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience as a business owner and operator and an expert in offering top-notch customer service and training to his clients.
Like so many entrepreneurs, Burns has multiple irons in the fire. But, high on his priority list is building his brand, “Health and Wealth with Coach Josh,” and his company, Coast 2 Coast Entrepreneurship Consulting. He invests most of his time in training and coaching young entrepreneurs who need help with launching, marketing, building a client base, incorporation, staffing, payroll, and taxes. His experience is well-matched with his clients’ needs, and he has a fantastic network of professionals who are available when he needs them.
Entrepreneurship is in Burns’ DNA. He watched his father build a New York messenger service into a money-making proposition through innovation, creativity, and hard work. Burns grew up lending a hand in the family business and creating his own entrepreneurial opportunities. Even as a teen, he had an eye for profitable endeavors, buying low and selling with a good markup.
The pandemic was life-changing for Burns. “Covid hit me really hard,” he says. “I was hospitalized for six weeks and fighting for my life.” He had a miraculous comeback and does not take a single breath for granted. Prioritizing his health, he lost a hundred pounds and emerged with a whole new determination to share his success with others. In a spirit of fantastic generosity, Burns shares five tips for success that will be beneficial for everyone:
- Develop an Unbreakable, Positive Mental Attitude.
Burns believes attitude is everything. It affects all aspects of your life in every waking moment. “How you do one thing is how you do everything,” says Burns. “It is all connected.” It would seem he has a lot in common with Abraham Lincoln, who said, “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” When you make positive changes in your attitude, they show up in even more significant ways in your habits, relationships, and career. Being intentional and selective about your attitude is a healthy choice with a big personal and professional pay-off. It affects how you view yourself, others, and everything you do. You cannot control plenty of things, but your attitude is one thing you can do something about. It takes the same amount of energy to have a positive attitude as a negative one, so why not invest your energy in being positive!
- Develop a Crystal-Clear Vision.
Developing a vision includes knowing what your goals are and writing them down. But, that is not enough. You need to be crystal clear on the how, what, when, why, and where of the goals you are aiming for and consider what you will feel like when you achieve your goals. “Without a clear vision, you will be blinded by distractions and procrastination,” says Burns. “Life doesn’t stop while you are working toward your dreams. You will have plenty of distractions to deal with!” Companies create vision and mission statements. They post them on social media and hang them on their walls. You are allowed to tweak your vision, but review it often and use it to guide your decision-making. Ask yourself if a decision will get you closer or farther from your vision. Try your best to avoid distractions.
- Develop a Fool-Proof Plan.
James Baker, former Secretary of State, is credited with the 5 P’s: “Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.” Burns couldn’t agree more. “One of the most important keys to success is having a plan,” says Burns, “and it needs to be fool-proof!” That means the plan you develop should be tried and true and can’t go wrong or be misused. Developing a plan requires forethought, research, and sometimes the help of an expert. Whatever it takes, gather the facts, then you can relax.
- Maximize and Ration Your Resources.
Shift your focus from the things you lack and find ways to use the resources you currently have at your disposal. “Some of my greatest successes were achieved with minimal resources,” says Burns. “I found great value in learning to maximize my current assets.” There is also merit in rationing your resources. Use your time, energy, and money cautiously and sparingly. Many entrepreneurs would be more successful if they were more discriminating about the use of available assets. Ration them and spend your resources wisely.
- Stir Up Daily Motivation.
Motivation is as essential as personal hygiene. It needs to be fostered and nurtured. It is worthy of your time and attention. “It needs to become a daily practice,” says Burns. “You can have the best team, vision, goals, and products in the world, and without motivation, your dream can lose its spark.” Team-building, healthy rituals, mindfulness, community, and even brain breaks can go far in infusing daily doses of motivation into organizations.
These tips are good advice from one who has experienced trial and error and learned what works. “Success is doing what makes you happy and never working another day in your life,” says Burns. “It is waking up without an alarm because you are so passionate about the journey that awaits you each day. Financial success is nice, but true success comes from engaging in positive endeavors that fulfill your passion every day.” His mission is to help his clients make their dreams come true.
